Salisbury is a cathedral city in southern England and is a great place to drive a van hire from Thrifty. With origins back to the Stone Age, the location of Salisbury was due to the fact it had such an abundance of water – being at the confluence of five rivers (the Nadder, Ebble, Wylye, and Bourne, which are tributaries for the Avon). The cathedral dates back to 1221, and is officially known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary. It is home to the largest cloister in England, the tallest spire is the United Kingdom, and the best preserved of one of only four remaining copies of the Magna Carta (an English document, drawn up in 1215, which lead to today's constitutional law). Building finished in 1280, but because it took only 38 years, it has only one consistent architectural style: Early English Gothic.

The spire, thanks to many reinforcements over the years, is the oldest pre-1400 spire in the world. Without significant support, it would have gone the way of many old, tall spires, and collapsed. In 1386, a clock was installed and it is believed that the clock is the oldest surviving and still-working in Britain.
